Good times at Loree Lake

Here is a note and some pictures from a recent trip to Loree lake from Natalie S. They had a few days where it was quite windy but had a good time despite.

"Just wanted to say "thank you" to John and Renee for making my first trip to Canada....the best ever. My group stayed at Loree Lake and had a great time. Although we didn't have any record setting catches.....the ones we did, sure make for great eating 4 nights. I can't wait to get back next year!

Cherrington Lake pictures speak for themselves.

It has been a couple of years since we saw Larry K. and Ken F. but it is great to see old friends. I used to guide Ken early in my bush life on Deer Lake when we had a main lodge there. We've caught alot of fish together, back in the day when I had the time to fish... They went to Cherrington last week and caught a lot of big fish. These ones speak for themselves!!

Nice to see the next generation visiting Amik Outposts

After 15 years in the tourist business since I was 19 years old, most of the fishermen that come to Amik Outposts have been older than Rena and I. That trend is beginning to change. It is nice to see groups of friends and young families making the decision to come up to Red Lake and experience a quality vacation on a beautiful remote lake with lots of trophy fish to catch. The Loftus Party went to Jeanette recently and had an awesome time. They had a good recommend on this particular lake since the group in front of them was Mason's father in-law, Jerry N. and friends who have been fishing Jeanette with us for the past 10 years and may have told a few stories to Mason over the years at family functions... The fishing was great and the good times were too. Here are some of their pictures.

Shearstone Lake

It has been rather windy up here the last few days and we have had a number of violent thunderstorms and even a tornado touching down in Ear Falls. The weather is supposed to even out now and it will make life easier for anyone whose number one job for a week is to stay on the fish!!

Last years winners of our photo contest came out of Shearstone today and had a great time. A little cooler weather than they are used to in July than they get in Kentucky but no bugs to speak off. The fishing was good throuhout their stay but was awesome on their last day....I tell everyone that we work it out that way. LOL

They had an intersting story to tell when they came out. Bobby D. caught a nice 34 inch northern, which is normal but as it got closer, his dad noticed something sticking out of its side. As they brought it closer they could see it was a lure. A previous fisherman on Shearstone had obviously caught this fish and the hook must have been too deep in his throat to get out so they did what they were supposed to do, cut the hook off your line and release the fish. This northern appeared normal in weight and fighting strength except for the hook jutting out of his stomach. After landing the fish, they were able to get the hook out and a leader too, which was not even hooked to the rapalla anymore! This tough customer was released and swam away a little sore but I am sure ready to heal up, get bigger and fight another day.

Recent highlights.

Here are a few of the highlights from around our lakes. Fishing has been normal with some real good sized fish being caught but numbers have been more of the talk recently.

The Hanson family fished Shearstone and caught lots! Mike had a 37 inch northern and Andrew who is 10 and on his first trip caught 2-23 inch walleyes. The biggest walleye was caught by Dad (Dick) and was a nice 25 incher.

Morleys had the Gehm party stay for 9 days and it turned out to be 10 days with a day delay with weather but this father/son group enjoyed every minute. They caught lots of upper 30 inch northerns with the largest being 39 inches and the walleyes were everywhere!

The Loftus crew fished Jeanette the week after the group leaders father in-law so they got to have a good visit and hear about the hot spots from a reliable source. A real good bunch of young guys and will be back in 2 years.

The Anderson party from Illinois were at Cherrington for 5 days recently and caught so many fish they had to make a video to prove it or no one would believe them! The video is 15 minutes long and it was constant fish on!! Bob caught a 26.5 inch walleye right off the dock and they figure they caught 40 to 60 fish right from shore at the cabin. Cherrington lived up to it's reputation again, producing countless walleyes over the 22 inch mark!!

Cobham River

The Sander party made the journey back up to the Cobham the other day and brought us some pictures from last years trip. They always catch some big fish and have a good time. I just stopped there today to drop some gas off and heard the new guy in the group had already caught a 28 inch walleye!

Weather is back to normal. So is the Fishing!

Everything has returned to normal in the north, the weather is beautiful, sunny and 70-80 during the day and 45-55 at night. Perfect for sleeping! Fish are still in 10 feet or less for the most part and even went back into the moving water. The Jias party came out today from a Loree lake 8 day adventure. They saw lots of weather in their stay at Loree and had to follow the fish as they changed with the weather too! Walleyes were caught in 4 feet and walleyes were caught in 20 feet they said. Fishing action near any incoming stream was Very Furious for a few days but have seemed to move away a bit in the last couple of days when the sun shone to the windy shorelines. Dan, a true walleye fisherman, named one of the points on Loree "no beer point" because there was no time to get a sip in because there was always a fish on your line! They commented on how great the average sized walleyes were, most of the fish were in the 18-22 inch range and caught a number over 25 inches with the largest measuring 27. A good number of bigger northerns caught as well with the biggest being 39 inches. These guys have fished many lakes in Ontario and were very impressed with the quality of fish they caught this week.

Lots of wildlife sightings too, they saw 8 moose, 2 bears and of course the marmot "George" who gets along quite well with the fishermen. The grouse also have been drumming all night which makes me wonder if the cold weather has forced them to lay their eggs a second time. One of the cows Tim saw was grazing upwind of them and they continued to troll towards her and got within 20 yards before she saw them... Off like a flash along the shoreline, until she hit a deep beaver run and went down like she was hit by a 338 Winchester magnum, she got up and went again. Another few yards and she tripped again before heading off into the bush!



The rivers are raging since the rain last weekend. Some places estimated that we got 8 to 9 inches of rain.
