Recent Highlights

I have had a few comments by fishermen/blog followers that I am not giving every lake equal blog space....just so everyone knows, the fishing and good times are happening every day at Amik Outposts on all the lakes, but I only have time to get some of the stories out there. I will try too put updates involving all of the lakes more frequently.

The walleyes are still in fairly shallow water(12 feet or less for the most part) and the northerns have been mixed right in there with them. The mayflies have come and gone in the past week as well and the cabbage weeds are just growing as well, we are probably 2 weeks behind a normal summer for these events as they usually occur in early July. This summer has been cooler than a normal year! Here is a few highlights from the last week or so.

The Kalkbrenner party made their bi-annual trip to Blackbirch and had the best year so far, catching many more big fish compared to past trips. There were a couple of young men with them and they were smilling like crazy on the way out!! Grant who is 8 had a 30 inch northern on the first day and James who is 12 had a 38 inch trophy. Most of the time the youngest catches the biggest fish but not this time as Gary had a Huge 29 inch wallye and Jeff caught a nice 39 inch northern.

The Frazer party came out of Cobham Morley last weekend and said that the cabin there was the best one they have stayed in yet! And the fishing was great to boot! They even saw a couple of moose, a cow and a nice Bull. Al seemed to have the lucky hand this trip catching a number of big fish including a 33 inch, 34, 36 and 38 inch northern as well as a 25 inch walleye. They caught as a group at least 20 walleyes in the mid 20 inch range and most of their fishing was done in 7 to 9 feet of water.

The Reitmeier party fished Vee lake recently and had not been with us in 13 or 14 years. These guys who are mostly walleye fishermen caught some good sized walleyes and commented on how hard they all fought. Lots of fish were 19 or 20 inches and the biggest being a 24 inch walleye.

The Toft party came back to their place in the north last week, Cherrington lake. As usual they caught a lot of large walleyes, not too many big northerns and 8 Lakers. The Lake trout were strong and big, the Biggest were a 28 and 30 inch monsters. They have been good at sending pictures in past years so I will share them when I get them. The said that the mayflies out on the big lake slowed their numbers down a bit but overall caught plenty to keep them busy and had a 26 inch walleye as their biggest and if I remember right they had a 39 inch northern. They will be back to better those numbers next year:)

My brother too fished Cherrington last week with some friends that we grew up with and had a blast. It was his first trip he has taken with his buddies and they had no trouble catching fish at all. A 26 inch walleye was their biggest as well but caught lots over 20 inches. They were lake trout fishing and caught a few lakers too and even caught a nice walleye down around 40 feet out in the big lake.

And finally the River...We had some new guests in there from the eastern U.S. and they had a tough day with the airlines to get to Red Lake the day before and didn't arrive in Red until 5 a.m. They were tired on the way in but very relaxed and rested on the way out! They caught a northern pike so big that they were afraid to bring it in the boat! They estimated that it was a 50 inch Northern pike!! I wish they would have gotten a picture of that monster!!!

Another busy week is ahead and I hope the weather turns to sun:)

Girl Power on Shearstone lake!!

The Frederick family spent last week on Shearstone lake and the girls, as usual out fished the men. David Sr. has fished many of our lakes and his son David and his wife Allison have accompanied him on the last number of trips but this year they added another fisher person to the group, Lisa, David Sr.'s daughter. She is from Arizona and I was a little worried how she would handle the rainy cold weather we had for a few days during their stay. When I arrived to pick them up everyone had big smiles and nice tans, on their faces anyways...not sure if it was from the wind or the good weather at the beginning and end of their trip! The weather was not a problem for Lisa or anyone else, the fishing in the rain was excellent. Lisa set the bar high at the beginning of the trip and no one was able exceed her largest northern catch ever of a 38 inch northern pike! She was really pumped to have been able to beat her dad and brother. David Sr. held the money on the walleyes with a 25 incher until the last day of the trip when his daughter in-law Allison caught the trophy walleye pictured below, a 26 inch walleye. This is her personal best in this category so it was a successful trip all around and for the record, the boys attributed the large catches to good guiding!!!

Here is a picture of the 29.5 inch Walleye I caught at Findlay Lake. That was quite a morning with my dad getting a 27.5, 27, 25, 26.5. Tom had a 27 and 28. Curt got a couple big ones the day before..

The Peters put up a Huge number!!!

The group that loves Loree lake the most just returned this morning and they were ecstatic to say the least! We offered them 3 extra days as we had an opening and they jumped at the opportunity to spend 10 days on their favorite lake. Bernice has been looking for a moose every year she has been up here and this year she finally got her wish. As her and Ed were fishing in a narrows they heard some splashing coming from behind them, as they turned around there was a BIG bull standing about 50 yards away. They stayed quiet and the moose ambled along the shore slowly and continued into the water and swam across the lake right in front of them. As he got up on the shore he stopped and shook off and the spray glistened in the sun, they were so happy to get to see this sight. Ed made the comment that when he stopped and looked back it would have been a perfect shot!! I hope he stays close, I will be on Loree this fall for a week.:)

The weather this week was a little adverse at times but their number of fish was very impressive!! 3011 fish for seven people in 10 days. That is a lot of fish. Jim caught a huge 29 inch walleye who he named Walter. And then the very next day he had another big one on in the same spot. As he got it into the boat he measured it up and again it was 29 inches, with the same split in it's tail. The biggest fish he has caught in all his trips to Canada. Ed had a 27 inch walleye and there were multiple 25 inch walleyes caught too. Carol caught a nice walleye and it spit up another walleye when they got it into the boat. Betty caught some big northerns on this trip, she had a 40.5 inch, a 35, and a 31 inch northern. Ed and Bernice were fishing in the bay behind the cabin and caught a few nice walleyes and 5 pretty big perch. The fish are still near the weeds in sometimes 4 feet of water but some are heading down to 15 or 16 feet. Things are still a couple of weeks behind but the cabbage weeds are growing and the fish are hanging around that oxygenated water. July is a great time to fish the north. Here are some pictures:

Loree Lake Friends are back

I was walking through our parking lot the other day I saw some nice artwork on the side of an RV and as I walked closer to it I noticed a familiar signature on it, Jim Peters. A long time guest and fishermen, who has brought 74 different people to various camps with Amik Outposts over the years and we appreciated every one he has brought to experience our spectacular fishing. Here is their fishing report from last year.
We have a painting in our office by Jim from a scene on Springpole lake on one of their trips with us. This one is from a vacation to British Columbia, very nice....

Good times at Loree Lake

Here is a note and some pictures from a recent trip to Loree lake from Natalie S. They had a few days where it was quite windy but had a good time despite.

"Just wanted to say "thank you" to John and Renee for making my first trip to Canada....the best ever. My group stayed at Loree Lake and had a great time. Although we didn't have any record setting catches.....the ones we did, sure make for great eating 4 nights. I can't wait to get back next year!
