Vee Lake Fishing

July weather has arrived and the fish are very active. Brought the Baranek Party out of Vee Lake today and they enjoyed themselves immensely. They fish mostly for walleyes and noted that they found them in 7 feet of water. Mostly around where there were trees fallen into the water. Quite a few snags but lots of fish as well. They fished the portage lake and had some really nice fish. A 26 1/2 " walleye and 2-24's. You usually do not catch tons of fish in that little lake but the ones you do catch are very nice.

Also they caught another 26"er right up in the moving water of the rapids at about 8 o'clock last night. Lots of numbers in that water as well. They said they had to figure the fish out depending on the day. Not a bad days work, eh!

Until next time.

Findlay Lake Trophy Walleyes A Plenty!!!

Today I picked up the Neinhuis Party at Findlay Lake. I could tell before I hit the dock that things went well. Nothing but HUGE smiles. "How did it go?" I asked.

"Excellent" was the reply. Shortly followed by "un-believable". They had the time of their lives. Most of these guys had alot of fishing experience so I knew that they would do well. But this was their first ever Flyin and they did not know what to expect. I figured they knew how to catch the big ones because when I was marking the map for them before they flew in, the were very interested in where the deeper water structure was on the lake. That is where you catch the big ones consistently. Karl Sr. had the largest Walleye of their 4-day trip, hitting the 29" mark on the Tape. A Real Trophy. But after a quick picture, back she went. There for someone else to catch. That is the beautiful thing about Catch and Release.

The other members of the Party did great as well. Karl Jr. had a 27" and a 26" Walleye, and Brad F. had 2- 27" Wally's.

One afternoon they were fishing in a bay just behind a point the wind was blowing past. The feed swirls around the point and the fish follow the feed. You don't always have to beat yourself up in the wind. They proceeded to catch 140 fish in one boat in one afternoon. They had 10 DOUBLES. They even had a walleye come up to the surface and take a bare Red jig as it was hanging over the boat because he was helping his partner put a fish back in the water.

They caught between 600and 800 walleyes for 4 guys in 4 days. 22 Walleyes we over 23". That is some good fishing. Findlay is Definately a Trophy Lake.

It is nice to be able to keep showing people the best fishing of their lives.

Another guest of ours hosts his own web page and the link is http://www.canada.muscodagang.com/ Check it out. It is very good. I hope it will inspire all of our other guests to send me some pictures and stories.

Until next time.
We have had more rain than normal this summer, and it shows here. Look at the length of the growth of the tips of the branches. I have never seen them grow this much before. Even the tips are curling over they are getting so long.

Morels, Caribou, and a 30" Walleye

Quite a few interesting things happened this past week. Morels by the pound were seen, picked and eaten at Loree Lake, a Caribou ran between a member of the John S. party and the cabin coming back from the outhouse, and a 30" Walleye was caught and released on Cherrington.

First the big fish. Ruth B. caught a 41" Northern in Walleye Alley on Cherrington. Her husband David was the guide and it was pretty generous of him to give her a Trophy Northern for their 25th wedding anniversary. They reported catching walleyes in in 12 to 15 feet of water most of their trip. Another member of their party also caught and released a 30" Walleye in Walleye Alley as well. As we get into July the Monster walleyes will be moving out to the BIG Lake. As I always say, "Don't plan on catching our shore lunch out there." Most fish are between 20 and 26 inches and FAT!!!

John S. and his group of 6 were in at Jeanette this week. They have been to Jeanette 5 times and this is the best they have ever done!! Tons of fish. They stated that they have caught some bigger fish in the past but never this many and in so many areas. They seemed to be everywhere and on the bite every day. One young man from this party was on his way back from the outhouse when he heard some noise between him and the cabin. He looked up to see a cow caribou walking right between him and the cabin. Encounters like that are so cool!!

As most people know there was a lot forest fires last season. Loree Lake was a target for one of those consuming creatures. BUT one item that thrives after an event like that. MORELS, Steve was fortunate enough to have a Gourmet Cook in his party and he spotted the tasty morsels on the shoreline as they were trolling along. They said that was so easy to find. Just troll along and watch the shoreline. They were so plentiful even I was given a bunch on the way out. They were great!! I should also mention that Nick who is 12 caught a 23 1/2" Walleye, on his first trip to Canada. Way to go.
This is the Glasebrook and Burm Party. This Team of Fathers and Sons have been fishing Findlay Lake since the Inagural Season in 1993 not missing a single season. I shudder to think of the number of walleyes handed a sore lip by this crew.

Trophy Northerns are Active!

The BIG Northerns are being caught and released on every lake! All of the parties are coming out of the bush saying they had caught quite a number of larger Northerns. Dennis W. party had a 43" 38" and a few around 36" Northerns at Cherrington. David S. party on the Cobham River had a 44" Northern, a 43" right after and a few between 38 and 41". Loree lake had the Twins, Todd and Toby S. from Ohio in this week and they caught a 38" Northern being their largest. They had a number of fish between 35" an 38". Jeanette Lake had the Mike P. family in this week and had 4 young men in the group that enjoyed fishing off of the dock when the Dads were having a snooze. They caught at least two 38" Northerns. That is the most consistent spot on the lake for the Trophy fish..

Walleyes are starting to become consistent as well. The biggest being caught on Blackbirch by the Tom D. party a 28 incher. Lots of 24 to 26" Wally's being caught. Bigger ones are becoming more active as the summer rolls on. The Scott S. family from Wi. are in at Cherrington this week. They always catch a pile of huge fish. I have known them for 12 years and they have always fished Cherrington. It is really cool to have been able to watch the kids grow up, and that they all still make a point to get together for this trip. Kirk D. and his sons were up at the Cobham in the Morley cabin. KC was the KING fisherman of their group of seven. He had 15 Northerns over 36".
here is Quint with a nice Walleye
A Beautiful fish
The Trophy of the week. Caught in the last evening of the trip. Guided by DAD of Course. 44" Northern.
The weather is starting to straighten out but still changes quickly. Here is a beautiful sunrise then watch how it changes by the afternoon.
Thunderstorms in the late afternoon
Nice and sunny on the Backside, double rainbow

Another week of Fishing over and LOTS of Fish with Sore Mouths!

Another week of fishing is done. The fish are starting to move out from the rapids to the shorelines and windy points. The weather has begun to turn the corner as well. Did not have as much rain up North as we did around Red Lake so water levels are starting to go down. Temps are pretty comfortable too, 50 to 75. The only draw back this week was a couple of days of wind. Most lakes are easy to get away from the rough water but it was still hard to hold the boat in place.

Walleyes are still a little confusing, in some lakes they are really shallow and others they are in 20 feet of water. The weather is becoming more stable so this should make it a little easier to pattern these tasty buggers.

Alot of things happen in a week but I can only write about so many. Here are a few fishing reports and some funny stories from this week.

The Greg K. Party from IL. were on Cherrington this week and had some good fishing. Bait seemed to make a Huge diference for them. Walleyes were hitting very softly. They had to really Finesse the Walleyes into taking the bait. They caught a lot more walleyes in the day if they used leeches or frozen minnows. One day when it was flat calm, they were out on the big part of the lake and could actually see they Walleyes coming up to their bait and just sit there for a couple of seconds before taking the bait. Still hitting it softly though. They even saw a Lake Trout come by. Greg has fished a lot of lakes in Canada and that is the first time he has been able to watch Walleyes taking the bait like that. This was his first trip with us and has another trip planned for August on Findlay Lake.

Loree Lake had 4 couples from Wis. in this week. The Rod S. Party got into some fast Walleye action at the 3rd narrows on the west end. One husband was telling me that his wife was reading and he told her to get ready because they were about to catch some fish. She put her book down and dropped her Jig. She had 6 fish in just a few minutes. That is some good Guiding right there! They did not have to go far to catch the biggest Walleye of the trip though. A 25" Walleye was caught right off the Dock. Most of their Walleyes were in about 20 feet of water.

The Northerns are feeding pretty heavy, mostly on Walleyes!! I have had quite a few more reports of Trophy Northerns Attacking walleyes.

Tom from the McCarthy Party from Wis.had a 35" Northern hit his 19" Walleye and not let go. He took pictures of both fish, the way they were landed. The Walleye was taken by the head and hanging out of the Northerns mouth. Normally the Northerns hit the walleye on the side but I guess this Northern meant business. The report from them said that they had to target two particular areas. One being in 5 or 6 feet of water just on the outside of the Bullrushes, and the other in 12 to 14 feet of water off of the rocky points. They were on the Cobham this past week. When I get that one I will post it right away.

The last story is funny!!! After Hand Picking just the right walleyes for shore lunch, Steve C. from Iowa was the was the man to clean 'em up for lunch. He was fishing on Blackbirch this week with the Sproule Party. After expertly taking all of the bones out the fish and finishing the job of skinning the fillets, he was done. Steve then took the gut pail down to the boat and proceeded to clean his knife in the lake. As he turned around to go up and grab his fish, he saw the GULLS. They were waiting and took the good stuff!!! All of his fish was gone. He got Teased pretty good for that. Ravens are as bad as Gulls. Remember too keep your eyes on the birds. They will eat Surf and Turf if given the opportunity. I speak from experience.

Here are some pictures from Cobham Lake. Thanks to Dallas H. They had 12 fish over 36" and 5-10 over 40".

Until next time.

June Fishing has Begun!

Fisherman are fishing hard and the fish are returning to their normal patterns as the weather starts to stabilize. The Northerns are still deeper than normal on some lakes but in their normal spots on others. Walleyes are slightly deeper at times, as deep as 15 feet. Usually they are in less than 10 at this time of year.

I took Arnie J. into Shearstone today. He has a group of fine young men with him and this is also the first time that he has been able to go fishing in Canada with all three of his sons. I like to be part of events like that. One of his sons lives in Colorado and has never been able to make the trip. No fishing report from them yet as they just went in but the Wells Party came out today and had Very good fishing. They had tons of Walleyes and a couple of 38 inch Northerns. The interesting part is that they were bringing in 12 to 14 inch Walleyes at the time. It is pretty rare to land the Northern while attached to the Walleye. This time they got lucky. Landing Two Big Northerns attacking Walleyes. The second one let go of the Walleye but all they had to do was put the Walleye back in the water and the Vicious beast took him again and this time they were able to land them both.

The Knauf Party had the largest Northern of the week at 44 and 41 inches. Brad H. had a 42 inch Northern on the Cobham. The Boesflug boys had good fishing on Cherrington, catching a 30 1/2 inch Lake Trout.

Good to very good fishing reports from all of the camps. Leeches were key for the Walleyes at Cherrington and Loree while minnows were the hot at Jeanette. The Knauf Party said that frozen minnows were just as good or better than live ones.

Also I am watching the hockey playoffs closely. Senators are down two games to one. GO SENS GO!!!

Here is a copy of a Fishing Report from Findlay Lake, they were the second group into that lake.

2007 Report for the Holland Group.

First, the weather. Most extreme the group has witnessed, this being the 10th year for some members of the group.

Day one started with heavy snow and sub freezing temperatures. This was followed by a few days of sun and 70's, and then four days of clouds and rain, with evening temps dipping into the high 30's most nights.

Surprisingly the walleye were up significantly in size over previous years, with an average increase for the group of 3%. Greg was most improved with a 7% increase in size. Daily average size was 21 inches, making catching dinner a challenge, in terms of harvest length restrictions. Still, most days, due to weather, less than two hours spent catching the large walleyes, along with a handful of small ones for dinner.

We had a three way tie for large walleye at 26 inches each, for Scott, Mike and Tim. Greg and Bryan both posted 25's. Scott, Mike and Tim split the large fish contest pool, and Greg walked away with Angler of the Year honors. Scott and Greg caught their fish on artificial lures, the rest came on jigs and leeches.

Northern Pike were very sporadic this year, with very few fish in the bays. A pair of 38 inch fish were caught by Ron and Scott, both casting bays, but not near shore. The rest of the above 30 inch fish were caught trolling weedlines and rocky points. Average size was down 6%, with only Scott showing improvement over last year.

Spoons took the two large fish, the rest were fooled by minnow baits. No large pike in the walleye hole or the falls this year.

Weather played a significant role in preventing any consistent pattern for Northern Pike, and several new techniques, along with some “ol school” tricks, were the order of the day.

Plans in place for a return in 08, confident that with more stable weather, the pike fishing will show a dramatic improvement in the size and number of fish caught.

Till next year………Here is the view looking West at the North shore of Red Lake at 5 A.M. I love being in the air at that time of day.
Have you ever been in the Bush and heard a singing or whistling sound that seems to go on forever? This is a picture of one of those Singing Frogs. I am sure they have a name, if anyone knows their name, let me know.
